Platform Newsletter - July 2024
Published July 11, 2024
Can you believe we’re already well into the second half of 2024?. Over the past months, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you face-to-face at various events, where we’ve discussed your challenges, exchanged ideas, and explored exciting new platform features. Recently, at events like RenderATL and Dreaming in Color in New Orleans, I witnessed firsthand the incredible innovation this community brings to their organizations.
That’s why I’m excited to announce a game-changing new feature that has significantly boosted my productivity, and I’m confident it will do the same for you: Lists have arrived in Slack! Dive deeper into their capabilities in the article below.
Imagine the endless possibilities for automating tasks and processes. To celebrate this month’s Emoji Day, I challenge you to create an automation using your favorite emoji as the trigger—or invent a custom one perfectly suited to your workflow. Wondering about mine? It’s 😜(:winky-tongue:).
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Turn your conversations into actionable tasks with Lists
Slack introduces Slack Lists, allowing teams to manage projects, requests, and priorities directly within Slack. This new feature solves inefficiencies of traditional tools by unifying information and conversations, increasing project completion rates, and meeting the needs of all team members. Best of all, you can use Slack lists as a step in Workflow Builder, combining the power of Lists with automations.

Slack's Migration to EMR 6: Boosting Performance and Efficiency
Slack Data Engineering recently transitioned from AWS EMR 5 (using Spark 2 and Hive 2) to EMR 6 (using Spark 3), improving performance, security, and cost-efficiency. In this article, they detail the migration journey, challenges faced, and performance gains, providing valuable insights for Data Engineers, Data Infrastructure Engineers, and Product Managers considering a similar upgrade.

Slack's security commitment

Using proactive measures and advanced threat intelligence, we prevent breaches, malware, and exposure of sensitive information. By collaborating with strategic partners, we reset compromised credentials in real-time, ensuring Slack remains secure and trustworthy for all users.
The latest on Slack
- We’re excited to announce the release of deno_slack_api version 2.7.0! This update brings several new HTTP APIs accessible via the provided API client parameter in function handlers: conversations.externalInvitePermissions.set, team.externalTeams.disconnect, team.externalTeams.list, users.discoverableContacts.lookup
- Enterprise admins can now exercise greater oversight and governance over enterprise Slack developers and their sandboxes within their organization! New capabilities include an approval system for sandbox provisioning permissions, a dedicated Slack Developer Program section in the admin dashboard for managing developers and sandboxes, and a notification system for real-time updates on sandbox requests and actions. This update enhances control and efficiency, ensuring seamless management of Slack Developer environments.
- We’re thrilled to announce that app notifications in Activity are now bundled into a single feed item, reducing noise and enhancing clarity in your activity feed. This update streamlines your experience by previewing the most recent message, reflecting the badge count for unread items, and allowing bundles to be marked as read directly from the hover toolbar or peeks view. Enjoy a cleaner, more productive workflow with these improvements!
- The Step for Apps deprecation is approaching fast! All Steps will be retired on September 26, 2024. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with detailed information and a survival guide available here.

Let’s level up our Slack game with automation! This month’s challenge is all about harnessing the power of Workflow Builder to streamline your tasks and save time.
Challenge: Create a custom workflow using Slack’s Workflow Builder:
- Identify a routine task or process that you perform regularly in Slack.
- Use Workflow Builder to automate this task or process. Whether it’s managing approvals, onboarding new team members, or tracking project updates, Workflow Builder can simplify it!
Goal: Build and activate at least one workflow that enhances your team’s efficiency or improves communication.
Share your automation: Show off your workflow creation skills! Share screenshots or describe your workflow’s impact in our Slack community or reply to this newsletter. Let’s inspire each other to work smarter with Slack!

Do you know which three amazing tasks you can ask Slack AI to handle for you? Slack AI can handle tasks such as generating channel and thread summaries to highlight important parts of conversations, providing search answers that offer concise responses based on relevant information within Slack, and creating daily digest recaps to summarize key discussions in selected channels. Give it a try!
